Level 1 Sea Kayak Courses

Paddle Canada Level 1 Courses

Every paddler starts somewhere. Whether it’s your first wet exit or guiding the next generation, we welcome you to this journey and to the sea. Sea kayaking is unique in that it becomes what you want it to be — a quiet connection with nature, a path of exploration across open water, or an exhilarating dance with surf and sea. Whatever your goal, your journey starts here.

3. Prerequisites No previous experience required

You don’t need any kayaking experience to join — just comfort in the water, enthusiasm to learn, and a sense of adventure. Minimum age 16 (younger paddlers welcome with guardian consent).

4. What You’ll Receive Certification, mentorship, and progression
  • Paddle Canada Level 1 certification (upon successful completion)
  • Access to our Online Learning Portal for pre-course prep
  • Course materials and post-course resources
  • Progression path to Level 2, Instructor Training, and Instructional Tours
5. Gear and Rentals Everything you need is provided or available for rent

You don’t need to own any gear. Valley and Rockpool sea kayaks, high-quality paddles, spray skirts, and safety kits are available to rent when you book, and PFDs are loaned free. You’re also welcome to bring your own kayak and gear.

Drysuits are required when the water is below 15°C. We check the water temperature before every course and will tell you ahead of your date whether you need one. If you do and don’t own one, rent one from us when you book.

See our rental options for more details.

6. Next Steps Continue your development

After completing Level 1, you can continue to Paddle Canada Level 2, or join one of our Instructional Tours for real-world mileage and mentorship.

“You don’t have to be an expert to feel at home on the sea — just curious enough to begin.”
7. Why Train With Kayak Ontario Certified instruction, small groups, and the boats we import
Kayak Ontario instructors and students on the water

Kayak Ontario has run Level 1 courses since 2018, and now teaches from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic coast. Every course runs under a recognized national or provincial standard, taught by instructors who are assessed and certified to deliver it.

  • Two certification systems: our program is led by Instructor Trainers in both Paddle Canada and ORCKA, so we certify paddlers and also train the instructors who teach them.
  • Small groups: a 1:5 instructor-to-paddler ratio, so you get real feedback on your paddling.
  • Proper boats: we import and sell the sea kayaks we teach in.
  • Inclusive teaching: nobody demonstrates in front of the group unless they volunteer.
  • Learning that continues: online dashboard access before, during, and after your course.
Learn it properly once, and everything after builds on it.
