Blended Learning — Starts Before the Water

Becoming a great teacher requires time to process theory before you ever hit the water. Your journey begins with our Learning Management System.

Build the Foundation
Comprehensive digital modules covering the IDEAS teaching model, equipment theory, and safety protocols.
Case Studies & Games
Learn how to use gamified learning to teach technical strokes — making your future classes more engaging for students.
Focus on the Water
Because the knowledge portion is handled through the LMS, on-water time is spent on high-value feedback, demonstration quality, and group management.
Take-Home Resource
You retain access to your digital lessons and lesson plan templates — a ready-made toolkit for your first solo class.

What to Expect

Three days — longer than the national minimum — so you're not just getting through it, you're mastering the material. We break down the Basic Skills curriculum and teach you to deliver it using the Paddle Canada IDEAS approach.

  • Lifting, carrying, launching — the fundamentals taught properly
  • Forward, reverse, pivots, and basic rescues — demonstration quality
  • Multiple micro-teaching sessions with supportive, constructive feedback
  • Guided by an Instructor Trainer throughout

Skills, Coaching, and Inclusion

This course focuses on the art of the demonstration. You don't need to be an elite athlete to be a brilliant Basic Instructor — we focus on demonstration quality, the ability to perform a stroke slowly and clearly so a student can mirror you.

We teach you how to adapt your instruction for different body types and learning styles. If you can't explain a stroke in three different ways, you don't fully understand it yet. All bodies and abilities are welcome — our goal is to create instructors who represent the diverse community of paddlers we want to see on the water.

Who It's For

The recreational paddler who loves the sport and wants to lead introductory clinics, waterfront programs, or club outings. The perfect follow-up if you've recently completed your Level 1 Skills and want to start your coaching journey. Ideal for camp counsellors, club leaders, or anyone who finds themselves naturally helping friends on the water and wants to do it with a certified, national standard.

Basic Kayak Instructor training on the water

Prerequisites:

Minimum age 16. Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills. Current First Aid (14 hr) with CPR. Significant paddling experience in various conditions — you should be able to perform all basic skills with confidence and grace before the course begins.

Our Standards

We provide a structured onboarding process, including pre-course prep and a readiness call if you have questions about your skills. This isn't a barrier — it's a support system. We want to ensure that when you show up on day one, you're ready to focus on teaching, not survival.

Certification: Successful candidates earn Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Instructor, authorizing you to conduct and certify Waterfront Kayak and Basic Kayak Skills courses, and to assist a Level 1 Instructor on a Level 1 Skills course.

This is the foundational credential in the Paddle Canada system. Many graduates use it as a stepping stone toward Level 1 Instructor certification or to work at summer camps and waterfront rental centres across Canada.

Questions

Do I need Level 2 Skills for this?
No. Basic Kayak Instructor requires Level 1 Skills. Level 2 is the prerequisite for the Level 1 Instructor course — a separate, more advanced certification.
What's the difference between this and Level 1 Instructor?
Basic Kayak Instructor certifies you to teach introductory courses (Waterfront Kayak and Basic Kayak Skills). Level 1 Instructor certifies you to teach and certify Level 1 students. Different scope, different prerequisites, different depth.
Can I teach professionally with this certification?
Yes. Basic Kayak Instructor is a nationally recognized credential. Many graduates work at summer camps, waterfront programs, rental centres, and club settings. It's also the foundation for the Level 1 Instructor pathway if you want to go further.
Why is your course three days instead of two?
We run longer than the national minimum to give you time to actually master the material — not just get through it. More micro-teaching reps, more feedback, more time to integrate the IDEAS approach before you're on your own.
Why Kayak Ontario for instructor training?
We know the Great Lakes. Our instructor trainers work daily on these waters and understand what it takes to lead here. You'll get honest feedback, strong mentorship, and practical tools you can use immediately — whether you're coaching at a camp, leading club outings, or building toward the next certification.
