Coastal Mission: Cape Breton
Great Lakes paddlers know wind and waves. They rarely meet a coast like this one. Four days based in Ingonish, Cape Breton: open Atlantic, big cliffs, and few places to land. It is one of the most exposed coasts we have paddled anywhere.
This is a post-Level 2 course. Course days run at venues like Cape Smokey, Ingonish Harbour, Meat Cove, White Point, Aspy River and Cabot's Landing, and we return to the campground each evening. Days on the water are paired with shore-based sessions on weather, navigation and trip planning. The skill that matters most here is judgment: reading the forecast, picking the window, and knowing when the answer is no.

The Four Days
September 25 to 28, 2027: four course days, Saturday to Tuesday. Each day's venue is chosen around the forecast and the group, so there is no fixed itinerary. On a coast this exposed, making that call is part of the course.
What You'll Learn
- ✔ Reading the window: marine forecast, wind and sea state, turned into a go/no-go call
- ✔ Exposed-coast planning: committing sections, escape routes, and where the landings are
- ✔ Open-coast boat handling: coached on the water, in conditions matched to the group
- ✔ Leadership: group management and decision-making on a committing coast
What's Included
- ✔ Four days of coaching with experienced Kayak Ontario coaches, maximum 1:4
- ✔ On-water coaching on every day conditions allow
- ✔ Shore-based workshops: weather interpretation, navigation and trip planning

Good to Know
- — The course is based out of Ingonish, Cape Breton.
- — Base camp format: daily paddles, evenings at the campground. This is not a backcountry camping expedition.
- — There are times when paddling here is not safe. When that happens we find alternative activities for the day. Daily plans adapt to weather and conditions, and that is part of what you'll learn.
- — Seals, seabirds, and occasional whale sightings are part of paddling this coastline. No guarantees, but it happens.
- — Rentals available: sea kayak, dry suit, and paddling kit. Select your rentals at checkout.
Where This Fits
After Level 2 there are three missions. Take any of them, in any order. None is a prerequisite for another.
Prerequisite: This is a post-Level 2 course. You need Kayak Ontario or Paddle Canada Level 2, or equivalent coastal experience, with reliable self and assisted rescues. You should be comfortable with a full day on the water. Not sure you're ready? Get in touch.
Where this leads → Planning and judgment on an exposed coast are core to Level 3. You leave with open-coast days, and the decisions behind them, to build on.
