Coastal Explorer Days

$149.95 CAD

Premium big-water coaching days on the Saugeen Peninsula — Lion's Head, Dyer's Bay, Cape Croker, Tobermory. Expect open-lake swell, real coastal navigation, and the kind of terrain normally found on the ocean. These are full days on the water with small-group coaching in Class 2 conditions, focused on building the judgment, confidence, and technical ability that bigger water demands.

The Saugeen Peninsula is one of the only places in Ontario where paddlers can develop true coastal-water judgment without travelling to the ocean. Locations are weather-dependent and may change — that flexibility is part of the experience.

What You'll Work On

Each day is coached to the group and the conditions. These aren't scripted lessons — they're real decisions in real water.

Coastal Navigation & Decision-Making
Reading the environment, planning routes in real time, and making the calls that keep a group moving safely in dynamic water.
  • Route selection based on wind, swell, and landing options
  • Crossing strategies and timing
  • Environmental reading — cliffs, reflections, current
  • Real-time plan adjustments
Boat Handling in Conditions
Stroke refinement and boat control when the water stops being flat — the skills that separate comfortable paddlers from confident ones.
  • Bracing and edge control in swell
  • Turning and manoeuvring in wind and waves
  • Rock gardening and close-quarters handling
  • Landing and launching in surf
Risk Management & Group Awareness
The judgment and awareness that keeps a group safe when conditions are bigger than expected — or exactly as expected but still demanding.
  • Dynamic risk assessment on the water
  • Group spacing, communication, and leadership
  • Rescue considerations in coastal terrain
  • Towing awareness and setup

Questions

Do I get a certification from this?
No. These are coached development days, not certification courses. They build the skills, hours, and judgment that make your next certification course — Level 2, Level 3, or a leadership pathway — more successful.
Where exactly will we paddle?
Locations are weather-dependent. We choose from Lion's Head, Dyer's Bay, Cape Croker, and Tobermory based on conditions — whichever gives the group the best coaching terrain for the day. You'll be notified of the confirmed location closer to the date.
Do I need my own kayak or drysuit?
No. After registration you'll receive a gear and rental pack with options for kayak and drysuit rentals. The base price is kept flexible for paddlers who already own their kit.
How big are the conditions?
We aim for Class 2 conditions — open-lake swell, wind, and coastal features like cliffs and rock gardens. These are real conditions, not simulated. If conditions exceed what's appropriate for the group, we adjust the plan.
I've only done my Level 1. Am I ready?
If you're confident with wet exits, re-entries, and comfortable spending a full day on the water in moderate wind and waves, you're likely ready. These days are specifically designed as a bridge between Level 1 and Level 2. If you're unsure, email us and we'll help you figure out the right starting point.
What's the difference between this and a Level 2 course?
Level 2 is a multi-day certification course with a structured curriculum and formal assessment. Coastal Explorer Days are single-day coached sessions focused on building experience in conditions — great preparation for Level 2, but no assessment, no certification, and no multi-day commitment.

We acknowledge that the Saugeen Peninsula, including Lion's Head, Cabot Head, Dyer's Bay, and Tobermory, lies within the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which includes the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation at Neyaashiinigmiing.

We recognize their enduring relationship with these lands and waters, and we are grateful to paddle in a place cared for by the Saugeen Ojibway People since time immemorial.
