Ingonish, Cape Breton

$1,485.00 CAD

Cape Breton's coastline is dramatic, wildlife-rich, and technically demanding — seals, seabirds, tide-driven currents, and exposure that rewards good seamanship. This four-day base camp expedition develops coastal skills and the expedition mindset needed for independent multi-day paddling, with a warm cabin to return to each evening.

Daily paddles are paired with land-based workshops on tides, weather, navigation, and trip planning. You'll paddle more purposefully and think more clearly about the water you're moving through by the time you leave.

Questions

Is camping involved?
The expedition runs out of Hideaway Campground in Ingonish — you paddle each day and return to the campground each evening. If you'd like to camp on-site, contact Hideaway directly to arrange your own site. This is not a backcountry camping expedition — if that's what you're after, see our Philip Edward Island or Lake Superior expeditions.
Do I need my own kayak and gear?
Yes — kayak, paddle, PFD, and safety gear are not provided. Personal paddling layers are also your responsibility. If you need rental gear, get in touch and we'll see what we can arrange.
What if the weather is bad?
Cape Breton's weather is part of the experience. We adapt daily plans to conditions — some days that means adjusting the route, some days it means a land-based workshop instead. We only cancel paddles for genuine safety concerns.
I've only done my Level 1. Am I ready?
Level 1 meets the minimum. Cape Breton is a tidal, exposed coastal environment — more demanding than most Level 1 training venues. Level 2 is preferred for a reason. Not sure where you stand? Email us and we'll give you an honest assessment.
Can I earn a certification on this expedition?
Yes — this expedition can count as the field component for the ORCKA Kayak Tripping certification program. Pair it with the KT1 or KT2 online theory module to earn your certification. Each level requires its own dedicated expedition. If you just want the on-water experience without the theory, the expedition stands on its own — no module required. See the certification options below.

Certification Pathway

This expedition can count toward an ORCKA Kayak Tripping and Guiding certification if paired with an online theory module. Optional — the expedition stands on its own without it.

Cape Breton has long been home to the Mi'kmaq people, who have lived, travelled, and cared for these lands and waters for generations. We acknowledge their deep and ongoing connection to this place and recognize that it remains their unceded territory. As we explore these waters, we do so with respect and appreciation for the history, knowledge, and stewardship of the Mi'kmaq.
