Dynamic Coastal Conditions
Tobermory — Georgian Bay, Bruce Peninsula
Two days in dynamic water — wind waves, reflected seas, clapotis, rock gardens, and surf zones. The conditions that flat-water training can't simulate and YouTube can't teach.
Georgian Bay doesn't have current or tide, but it produces some of the most dynamic coastal water in Ontario. Wind builds across open fetch, rebounds off cliff faces, pours over shallow rock shelves, and creates confused seas at headlands. This clinic puts you in those conditions deliberately, with a coach at 1:4 who can push you exactly to your edge — and help you extend it.
What You'll Work On
Conditions-dependent coaching — what we paddle and where we go adapts to what Georgian Bay gives us that day.
- Paddling in beam, following, and quartering seas
- Clapotis — reading and paddling reflected waves off cliff faces
- Maintaining stability and direction in confused, multi-directional sea states
- Using wave energy for speed and positioning instead of fighting it
- Reading water movement around and over rock features
- Entry and exit lines through rock gardens
- Brace-on-demand in turbulent, unpredictable water
- Risk assessment — knowing when a feature is playable vs. when to pass
- Reading sets, timing entries, and committing to a line
- Launching through broken waves — angle, speed, and paddle placement
- Landing in surf — stern rudder control and staying ahead of the wave
- Capsize recovery in the surf zone — the rescue nobody practises enough
- T-rescue and scoop rescue in wind, chop, and reflected seas
- Towing in conditions — contact tow, in-line tow, knowing when to use which
- Self-rescue when the paddle float is actually getting tested by waves
- Group management during a rescue — who does what when it matters
Both Days Include
